How to Reduce Elevator Emergencies

This article will tell you simple ways to reduce elevator entrapments and other emergency situations. Keep these notes in mind during annual maintenance. 

1.    Elevators should always be dirt and dust free. Dust on an elevator and in a machine room is a sign of equipment not being properly maintained. Other than that, it is also dangerous to individuals that are highly allergic to dust. There is also a chance that if a person gets enclosed in a dusty elevator for a long time, it can become life threatening for that person.

2.    Make sure the technicians responsible for repairs and maintenance regarding your elevator remain observant. Staying in touch and communicating with your elevator technician is very important. Be sure to talk to them after each maintenance check in order to stay up to date with your elevator.

3.    Elevators should be level at all times. An elevator that is mis-leveled is a sign that the brakes are worn out. Immediately report this to your maintenance team if you notice it. 

4.    Let elevator passengers be aware that they do not need to rush into elevators as the doors are closing. This is the most common reason why accidents occur. Many people assume that the elevators doors will not close on them and although that is true in most cases, there are always malfunctions. If an elevators door continues to close, it can cause serious injuries. 

5.    If you are riding an elevator and it stops abnormally, do not try to force it to move or open. Let building occupants know that they need to wait for security/ a qualified technician to reach out to them before they attempt to leave. 

6.    Lastly, occupants should know to never use an elevator in the case of an emergency. There should be a notice conveying this on every floor that uses an elevator. Doing this avoids entrapments. 

These are simple easy ways to dramatically reduce chances of elevator related emergencies.
