Elevator Lobby Controls and Indicators

An elevator car is filled with lights, controls and indicators. But there are also indicators and controls within lobbies and hallways.

Call Buttons are used to request an elevator to a specific floor. The buttons will illuminate to indicate that your request has been received. They’re typically mounted forty-two inches above the finished floor.

Hall Lanterns are used to indicate arriving elevators and show you which direction it will be travelling in. There are also illuminated indicators along with an audible tone to indicate direction.  These audible signals sound once for the elevators going up and twice for elevators going down. Some elevators have an actual voice indicator that says, “going up” or “going down”. Hall lanterns are typically mounted a minimum of seventy-two inches above the floor and are required to be visible from the vicinity of the call buttons.

Floor Designators are usually made up of white numbers on a black background. The contrast between colors helps passengers see the indicators better. All call buttons also have raised number and braille characters. The numbers you see are usually two inches tall and are placed sixty inches above the finished floor.
