Quick tips on Elevator and Escalator Safety

With there being over 84,000 elevators and escalators in New York City, this equipment is standard in our daily lives. Years of improved technology have minimized the risks so much that few people realize it’s dangerous to use an elevator incorrectly. The Elevator Unit ensures the operational safety, lawful use and reliable service of vertical transportation devices through the city. This includes elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, amusement rides, conveyors, personnel hoists, dumbwaiters and material lifts. At Citywide we monitor all aspects of your elevator inventory starting first with safety, reliability and dependability. We also monitor things like contract management, invoice review and capital improvements. We help building owners and managers navigate through the DOB system as well. From permit to completion we are there every step to help ensure your elevators and escalators are installed and maintained to the highest standards and compliance. If you are concerned about the safety or reliability of your equipment give us a call.

The elevator unit responds to complaints, conducts training,  acceptance testing, special assignments, surveys, responds to incidents, and they conduct re-inspections of private and DOB hazardous violations. Also, the Elevator Unit processes new elevator applications, issues permits for modernizations, removals and dismantles, conducts plan examinations, and handles construction code inquires and clarifications over the phone and by mail.

Elevator Safety
·  Do not exit an elevator that is stopped more than 9 inches from the landing
·  Never lean on elevator doors
·  Look down and make sure the elevator is level with the floor as you enter and exit
·  Rather than using any part of your body to hold open a closing door, use the door open button
·  Keep clothing items like scarves and ties clear of the closing elevator doors
·  Avoid jumping which can make an elevator uneven with the floor, or even cause you to get stuck

 The elevator 1,2,3’s:
